NECAT Beamline

The Northeastern Collaborative Access Team (NE-CAT) facility at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory is managed by Cornell University and consists of seven member institutions:

  • Columbia University
  • Cornell University
  • Harvard University
  • Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • Rockefeller University
  • Yale University.
  • Primary funding for this project comes from the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Additional financial support for NE-CAT comes from the member institutions.

    24-ID-C Beam Line

The 2007-2 APS run cycle (April-August) ended on August 25, to be followed by a month long scheduled accelerator maintenance period. During this entire period, the 24-ID-C beam line operated flawlessly and all users reported good productive experiences. The figure below summarizes the use of the beam line by institutional members, General Users, development, and unscheduled time for the 2007-2 run. Of note, over the past year as this beam line has matured, the time used for development activities has decreased continually from 50% to the current 6% and General User allocated time is currently 32 % with the target of achieving 50% for the 2008-1 run. Scientific productivity is increasing rapidly, with 25 papers already published this year on research conducted using the 24-ID-C beam line.

    24-ID-E Micro-Diffraction Beam Line

The 24-ID-E beam line was heavily used during August by NE-CAT Institutional and Core Collaborators as well as a few General Users. Although the experiments authorized were intended for the support staff and users to gain experience with the MD2 micro-diffractometer and commission the entire beam line, virtually all experimenters were able to gather new or higher quality data than could be obtained earlier on other beam lines. The installation of the MD2 micro-diffractometer on 24-ID-E has now been demonstrated to be a new major highly productive addition available for NE-CAT’s users. The 2007-3 run will be more heavily scheduled for all users with the intention of declaring 24-ID-E and the MD2 fully operational for NE-CAT and General Users in 2008-1. With the success already achieved with this micro-diffraction beam line, planning is underway to add micro-diffraction capabilities to the operational 24-ID-C beam line.

    24-BM Bending Magnet Beam Line

Considerable progress has been made during August in moving the 8-BM beam line to Sector 24. All the user end station equipment has been moved. We are now awaiting APS approval of the optical train and x-ray ray tracings before disassembling and moving the optical equipment.
