Sometimes, a dewar arrives warm and without any visible or noticeable breaks in any of the common breakpoints, such as the neck. In these situations, it is possible that the vacuum has been lost on the dewar over time, preventing it from holding temperature. NE-CAT can check the integrity of the vacuum by pumping down the dewar, then, while the dewar is under vacuum, Ed Lynch flows helium gas over the outside of the vacuum vessel, especially at the seams.

At the start up of operations for the 2021-2 run, it was discovered that one of the cards which aggregates data from multiple modules in the EIGER2 detector on 24-ID-C was faulty. As a result, NE-CAT was forced to reschedule all users on 24-ID-C for the first week of user operations. However, Dectris was able to immediately send us a replacement part which was successfully installed by Ed Lynch, Jim Withrow, and Malcolm Capel. Replacing the card did require removal of the EIGER2 from the 24-ID-C A-frame and its subsequent re-installation.
At the Plenary Session for the APS/CNM User Meeting, it was announced that the storage ring installation period of the Advanced Photon Source Upgrade project is now scheduled to begin April 17, 2023. NE-CAT and the APS will be 'dark' for 1 year following this date.
Work by the lab of Song Tan at the University of Pennsylvania on structure of the histone demethylase LSD1 bound to its nucleosome substrate together with its accessory protein known as CoREST has been featured on the APS Website.
Malcolm Capel and Frank Murphy will be speaking at "Current and Future Trends in Macromolecular Crystallography Experiments." This workshop is hosted by NSLS-II and will be held virtually March 16-18, 2021. The workshop will be from 12pm - 6pm EST each day.
Malcolm will be speaking in Session I (March 16, 2021). His talk is entitled, "New endstations at NE-CAT: MD3UP microdiffractometer and 30 puck ALS-style loader."
Structural work on SARS-CoV-2 papain-like protease, SARS-CoV-2-PLpro, required for processing viral polyproteins to generate a functional replicase complex and enable viral spread has been featured as a highlight on the APS website.
